The second item is HorrorHound weekend in Cincinnati. That starts tomorrow (I’m late, I know!) but you can come by the Post Mortem Press table where I’ll be signing books that I’m in. PLUS, I have a few copies of Men of Five to give away to people who buy any of the anthologies I’ve got stories in. If I should happen to run out of paperback copies, I’ll have coupons on hand for discounts on the eBook version.

Is thirdly a proper term? Oh well. I’m a writer and I can play, right? My story, Sewer Rats, was selected to be in the PMPress “best-of” anthology, Dark Doorways. What’s special about this book (other than my story) is that it features a metric shit-ton of great fiction from the likes of Paul Anderson, Kenneth W. Cain, Joseph Williams, and Matt Ashcraft. The bonus? It also includes new work from Jack Ketchum/Lucky McKee and rare as hell reprints from Jonathan Maberry and F. Paul Wilson. Can you say excited to be in it? I’ve compiled, edited, and released the anthology, Children of the Moon for Misanthrope Press. It reigned in the Amazon top 100 anthologies for about 3 hours and promptly fell out. I was cut from the shortlist of Night Terrors II from Blood Bound Books. It was a long haul and I’m proud to have had a story considered until the very end. I’m sure it’s going to be a great anthology. It was a nice email, though, with another nudge to continue submitting.  I think I probably will. That’s the reject part.

I don’t write much flash fiction. What I do write is just shitty and geared toward character or scene building for shorts or novels in progress. And those usually come in the form of 10.5 minute writing prompts every other Saturday at CMC, which is my writing group. We do one of these prompts at the start of every meeting. Anyway, I’m digressing.

One of these prompts turned into an actual little flash piece under 400 words called “A Vision in Red.” I submitted that to Pill Hill Press and it was accepted today for their Daily Frights 2012. Go me. I’m not exactly sure when this one will be released but I assume end of this year, early next. Once I pin down a date (either by looking it up or being told) I’ll post it, along with purchasing information like I always do.

In other news, my bestie Inanna put up another eBook short. This one is a personal favorite of mine, The Seventeenth Sphere. Maybe because I’d like to… well, nevermind. I won’t go into what I’d like to do. You don’t want to hear. At any rate, the story is well worth the buck.

Now I’m off to find out why my poetry homework didn’t submit like it should have. Sigh.

Fright Night Film Fest was, in a word, a semi-failed experiment. It was great to see and listen to John Carpenter speak and it’s always nice to see the folks from Post Mortem Press, artist Lydia Burris, as well as Darrin Dickerson from Ghostwater Films (yeah, if you love good indie films, buy D4 here), the hotel was well and truly fucking horrible. They gave away our room (despite us calling the day prior and verifying our reservation), the AC was shot in half the hotel, parking was ludicrously inadequate, the ice machine or the pop machine on our floor worked, and to top it all off, since they gave away our room, we were forced into a smoking room on a smoking floor. Just horrible. Our compensation? Free breakfast… and I won’t even get into that.

Children of the Moon, the anthology I’m editing for Misanthrope Press is nearing completion. I’m just waiting on artwork and authors to return bios/contracts. It’s going to be a good anthology and I hope it finds the audience it deserves. Then we can roll forward.

As far as my own submissions, I have two out at the moment. One still with Blood Bound Books and one with Post Mortem Press. Hoping to hear good news on both by the end of August, but I will prepare for the customary reject letters so that I’m even more elated if they should get picked up.

Once  CotM is out and about, it’s back to the novel. I think it’s time I stepped into that arena. Naturally, I’ll probably get laid out on the first punch, but if I never try, I’ll never know.

Interesting people I’ve seen… Sandahl Bergman, Kane Hodder, and Jay Underwood. Tony Todd (Candyman) came over and talked awhile. Nice guy. There’s a few porn stars here, too, I think. But as I commented to Inanna: they’re not as attractive without all the sex going on around them.  There’s either a lesson there or I’m just getting old.

Met a few nice people, too. I’ll post about all them later once I’m back home and have all the names and cards sorted out.

Inanna and I attended MARCon in Columbus. Picked up some good tips for Misanthrope Press but the actual writing panels were a bit on the weaker side. Another bonus, though, was getting to meet F. Paul Wilson. He’s long been a favorite of mine and quite an influence. A few things he said stuck with me in relationship to my current status as a writer. First, ‘we make shit up.’ Yes, we do. And second, the golden rule of writing, which was that if you want to write, then you have to write. Put your ass in the chair. There’s no excuse for not doing it.

Misanthrope has closed its doors on the Etched Offerings anthology. Decisions have all been made and notifications will be going out in the next week. It’s going to be a phenomenal book. Super stoked over SJ Tucker and Chris Orapello’s involvement in the project. Top drawer.

Lastly, I’ll be with Post Mortem Press at the St. Louis convention Con-Tamination the weekend of June 24th. I assume I’ll be signing books, but at the very least sitting there with a smile on my face. Come on by if you’re in the Lou that day and say hello!

Still haven’t heard back on the single story I have out in submission land, but that’s okay by me. The closing date is today, so I expect to hear back in the next few weeks. Fingers crossed.

And that’s it.

No new pubs to announce. I have one story out for submission though I won’t hear back on it for another couple of months. We’ll see what happens with that.

Title Goes Here: released Issue Seven over the weekend. Misanthrope Press has three anthologies open for submissions: Etched Offerings, Children of the Moon, and A Rustle of Dark Leaves. I’ve been working on those items lately as much as I can as well as other personal items. Hopefully time will reinvent itself and I can get back to writing more.
